“What’s This?” The Nightmare Before Christmas Tarot Review

"Sandy Claws... in person. What a pleasure to meet you. Wh - ! Why, you have hands! You don't have claws at all!"

Tim Burton’s stop motion animated classic “The Nightmare Before Christmas” is in the hearts of all of us Goths. All the characters that we love and adore make a beautiful appearance in this deck. We see Jack Skellington’s journey as our Fool’s journey through the major arcana.

The colors in this deck cover a very large spectrum. We see murky greens and greys with highlights of blood red. Pops of pumpkin orange and vivid yellows really bring this deck a lot of life and it really sets a tone. You immerse yourself in this limbo of Halloween and Christmas, just like Jack.

This deck comes with a 126 fully illustrated guide book. Every card sticks with the theme of the film and the situations in the movie are associated perfectly with the cards. It truly is a joy to read this book and fall back in love with all of its messages that we may overlook.

It is in the style of a pip deck and it is reversible for those of us that use reversals. The suits have been changed, Candles/Wands, Needles/Swords, Potions/Cups, and Presents/Pentacles. The corners are rounded and smooth. I would say it may be a bit difficult for a beginner to use this deck. To someone who is newer to tarot, the minors may all look the same to them. However the guidebook walks you through the meanings very well.

The cardstock is lightweight and flexible. The finish of it is like a matte velvet which is truly luxurious and makes the artwork look wonderful, however it does seem to clump together at times. It’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make for the art.

Yes it is a novelty deck, that being said, it is a well thought out tarot deck and is intended for function. It wont just be a collectable for me, I have taken this off the shelf a number of times. It likes to be used for any new adventures you may be contemplating, just like Jack! How cute is that, Jack’s adventurous energy really is within these 78 cards.

How to Use a Pendulum

Pick Your Poison

There are many different kinds of pendulums. Some are crystals at the end of a chain. You can choose a crystal that is calling you or that feels right in your hands. Think of what type of questions you tend to ask. If it is a lot about love, maybe rose quartz is perfect for you. Working on your psychic abilities, try amethyst. Have a lot of negative energy because of work or home life, black tourmaline maybe best for you. Recently my taste has changed. I now love metal pendulums. They sit heavier, I got a beautiful brass and silver pendulum that feels more powerful than the rest and the circles it creates are much more hypnotizing to my eyes. That is just my personal opinion, use what feels wright and in line with you. If you do any other divination system, the pendulum loves to work in conjunction with them. I always bring one with my deck of cards and they play well together.

How to Use a Pendulum

1)      Cleanse

Just like we cleanse are cards or crystals we definitely need to cleanse and connect with our pendulum. To cleanse you can run it over sage, Palos Santo, my personal favorite is using dragons blood incense because it gives it lots of mars energy. To connect to a new pendulum I usually lay it under my pillow while I sleep, I also carry it with me in my bag and with my cards. After just a night and a day, I notice that it aligns with my energy quickly and is ready to talk.

2)      Prep your questions

When you are looking into a specific its best to gather your thoughts and write your questions, that way you can truly cover all aspects of the topic. You can gain insight to the situation from angels you probably did not think of before. I would also write what the pendulum answers and refer to it later when more information becomes clearer.

3)      Position yourself

You want to make sure you are sitting up straight with both feet planted on the ground. Use your dominant hand to hold the end of the pendulum. Clear and settle your mind. Playing soft music, burning incense and even changing the lighting can help you relax.

4)      Learn how your pendulum speaks to you

The best part of this divination system is that it is quick yes or no answers. I have learned there are two main ways it responds. Think of a compass lying flat in front of you. For some, yes means it swings North to South, and No is East to West or vice versa. Another way is when the pendulum circles clockwise it means yes and counter clockwise it means no, or again vice versa. Ask it to show you yes, then ask it to show you no. If you feel you do not trust yourself just yet, a pendulum mat may come in handy for you while you build your connection. When the chain shakes and does not respond, usually that means you are not meant to know.

5)      Trust yourself

A good way to start to feel confident is to ask it questions you know are true or false. “My name is ___” or “My car is the color ___”. Once you feel in tune and it responding correctly then start asking your questions.

Pendulum Mat

There are no limits when using a pendulum. Have a conversation with your Gods and Goddesses. If you are working with a new deity, this is a great way to connect with and understand messages. Almost like an interview tarot spread, interview your spirit guides. I have even used it to find missing items in my home. The Labyrinth Tarot Deck Review

“You remind me of the babe…”

When I got deck as a gift I broke out in song, I am not gonna lie. One of my favorite childhood films is now a tarot deck. All the characters that we love so much make a beautiful appearance and are so well suited for the cards they represent. We have Jereth as The Magician, Hoggle as the Hierophant, Sir Disymus as The Chariot and my personal favorite, The Worm as Lord of Junk just to name a few.

I giggled when I saw the Justice card. It’s the Helping Hands, “She chose down.” It is just so perfect and truly takes you into that world.

The deck comes with a 128 fully illustrated and in color guidebook. The packaging is very nice; the cards will be safe in this tuck box. The meanings always refer to the movie and it is truly an enjoyable read. They created 3 tarot spreads that are super cleaver. They are named “Things Aren’t Always What They Seem”, “You Have No Power Over Me”, and “The Door Knockers Conundrum”. All are very beginner friendly, the most cards you pull in a spread is 4.

The minors.

This deck truly picks the most iconic moments to bring back to life through the cards. I interviewed this deck using a deck interview spread. I have found it truly loves talking about creative projects. It has a lot of fire energy. So just remember when you have a fun new idea you wanna look into, this deck would love to help you out.

There are some changes to some of the major arcana cards. The Lovers is now The Dancers, Death is now Fate, and the Devil is now Demon. The minors have also been renamed. Wands are Poles, Swords are Feathers, Pentacles is Junk and Cups is Pots.  The cards do have borders so for those of us who MOD our decks it is pretty even to cut and the edges are unfinished so no pretty gilding here. You can color the edges if you like. The minor arcana is set up as a pip style deck. That just means there is no people. For example, 6 of Pots is just 6 pots. Personally, I love this so much more because it gets your intuition working much better. The backs of the cards are not reversible, so keep that in mind if you read reversals.

The only negative thing I have to say after working with this deck is that the card stock seems to warp very easily. It’s not terrible though, It just makes me worry how it will be affected over time. I honestly can’t find any big complaints it’s just a delight to work with.

The artwork is so intriguing. It kind of reminds me of the Wild Unknown Tarot, where its that ink sketch type of artwork. It has a old time vintage aesthetic to it.

These beloved characters are just waiting to talk to you. If the deck could talk, I believe it would say, “And remember, fair maiden, should you need us…”

The Macabre Tarot Review

It just makes my gothic guts spill out in happiness.

“In Jungian psychology the shadow is the unknown parts of yourself. Shadow work, a long process that involves meditation and introspection, allows you to dive deep within your own psyche and connect with the parts you wouldn’t otherwise know. If your looking for love and light turn back now; this is not the deck for you.”

This deck is specifically designed for shadow work. I know, I know… we hear shadow work and most people run! This deck takes a very playful approach, yet still manages to get to the root of things.

Can we just take a minute to admire this kick butt packaging. The coffin shape is not only cool to look at but it’s a very sturdy box. You wont have to stress about your cards not being stored in a safe place. It looks great on display, its currently on my bookshelf now and I am showing it proudly. The best feature which I have never seen before, is when you open the lid a creaking door sound effect plays. It is just a show stopping event when you crack this baby open. I did not expect that pleasant surprise and everyone seem to eat that up! It’s a very fun and interactive moment when taking these cards out for a reading. I can’t wait to break this out for Halloween, but honestly I will be using this deck throughout the whole year.

Shimmering gold gilding.

The gilding is a beautiful shimmering gold. When it catches the light it just shines and these cards look absolutely radiant under candlelight. Although it is a dark deck it has a childlike innocence to it. The simplicity of the images can be deceiving, because every card is so unique you never get bored looking at them and the initial tone seems to change. I interviewed this deck with a interview spread and it was very talkative. It enjoys reading for people who are about to embark on a whole new journey. Major endings and beginnings is what this deck seems to crave. For it being called Macabre is very fitting.

The little book it comes with includes 3 special tarot spreads. Explore The Shadow Self is pretty self-explanatory. The Coffin spread explores when you are feeling trapped and stuck in a situation. It helps show you options and what’s waiting for you after this obstacle. The Tombstone Spread helps you acknowledge and remember what you’ve lost. It helps you reconnect with pieces of your past that can guide you in the present. Every spread is extremely beginner friendly. It ranges from a 4 card spread to a 7 card spread. 

The court cards have been renamed and It just makes my gothic guts spill out with happiness.

Now for the not so great stuff, sorry in advance. For a deck that is designed for shadow work, I was a bit disappointed with the Shadow Self spread. It didn’t seem to have much depth to it at all. The meanings to the cards are no different than any Rider-Waite tarot deck. Key words are provided for both upright and upside down cards along with a short blurb that in my opinion, tends to stay on the lighter side of things.

If you are truly looking to dive deeper into shadow work I recommend reading “Tarot Shadow Work: Using the Dark Symbols to Heal” by Christine Jette Or “Tarot For Your Self” by Mary K. Greer which takes more of a work book approach to shadow work. The artwork in this deck is perfect for shadow work, it just may need some support from an accompanied book to take it to that level of introspection.

I pulled out the Halloween Oracle to accompany this deck for a couple readings and you cant deny it just looks like a match made in a Tim Burton film.

What Does Your Black Moon Lilith Sign Mean?

Lilith was Adam’s first wife in the garden of eden before Eve. She demanded equality and independence. Especially sexual freedom, she wanted to express herself. Lilith is the shadow side of the moon (cue Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon) instead of nurturing mother energy she exudes empowerment, embracing who you are and not repressing yourself. She challenges us to indulge in the pleasures life has to offer.

The moon and rising signs gets you to novice status. For those of us comfortable with these concepts, but ready to move in intermediate astrology knowledge, it’s time to explore something called Lilith, or Black Moon Lilith. Lilith incorporates a person’s dark sexual side and the hidden self - making it the perfect astrology elective to add to your life.

Who or what is Lilith? It is the furthest point of the moon’s orbit around the earth, when the moon is at its most isolated. Representing your primitive impulses and behavior in the rawest form. It reveals repressed sexuality and expresses the dark side of one’s personality. It also refers to our “shadow self”. This is usually how it affects woman, we are so used to society telling us how we cannot freely express our sexual energy.

Most people who have it strongly tend to complain about the unwanted attention they get. You can’t shift the stars though doll.

Lilith is also our inner bitch ready to be released. Obviously just like everything, even the shadow side has its own shadow side. When your black moon Lilith gets too out of control it can make life difficult. I’m sure we can all raise our hand and admit we have encountered a “Karen” or bitch. She is extremely controlling, emotionally manipulative and very difficult to interact with. Bet you 20$ they have lots of Lilith aspects in their chart.

When a man has strong Lilith aspects, this has a lot more to do with the type of woman he attracts. Usually they attract woman who mirror unresolved issues of power and control that they have within themselves. Sorry guys, this doesn’t sound fun for you. Since they attract woman who have a lot of qualities that they fear, It can become a subconscious mind fuck for men.

In relationships when both people have this energy it usually starts as an affair and or ends with an affair. It could also turn into a polyamorous relationship. When this energy is in your chart strongly, you’re so not interested in any kind of traditional courtship. (Romantic love is an invented concept to manipulate and constrain women, duh.) The wild woman you seek already lives within you.

Seasons of the Witch Yule Oracle Review

This deck features 44 beautiful emerald gilded cards accompanied by a 144-page guide book. They are categorized by number.

First off I’d love to say that I just adore these women who put this together, I would love to become best friends. These are my type of people, Lorraine owns Spirit Element, a wellness boutique. She has a decade of experience as a herbalist, aromatherapist, crystal healer and witchcraft practitioner.

Juliet is a healer, seer and also an herbalist. She holds a master of science in herbal medicine. She comes from a long line of witch healers from Cuba and has indigenous roots as a member of the Taino Tribe.

Giada was born in Italy and has lived all over the American West. Her work is focused on femininity and magic. She enjoys incorporating mythology, historical customs and folklore.

Amazing woman am I right? This deck really does soak up this season. Every card is different however you feel they all come from the same world. The color scheme ranges from vibrant ruby reds, glistening emerald greens to charcoal grey’s and midnight blacks. The artwork is very endearing. I would consider this deck at a very beginner friendly level.

That being said, the keywords are in the book but not on the cards. The blurbs written on the cards are pretty simple to decipher. My only complaint is that since it is a seasonal deck, I am probably only going to pull it out once a year and it would make things so much easier if the keywords were on the cards themselves. Reading professionally with clients in person, I’m less likely to pull this deck out just because clients pay by the minute and stopping to figure out the meanings just isn’t a luxury I have.

The spreads that they created with this deck are so fitting for the season. They created 7 spreads, two of those, I have found myself using often. Those being “The Evergreen Wreath” spread and “The New Year Ahead” spread.

I have been loving my evenings journaling with this deck and it looks absolutely stunning on my altar. The messages are super humbling and every card is a wonderful thought provoker. The card stock is sturdy and flexible so shuffling can still happen. I always notice most oracle cards seem very stiff, this deck doesn’t have that issue.

The packaging is beautiful; the inside of the box matches the backs of the deck. The box it comes with is sturdy and you can rest assured your beautiful cards will be safe. This is a must for storing, you won’t have to wrap your deck or find a bag for it. It fits perfectly on my bookcase with other decks.

Nasa is predicting this lunar eclipse to be the longest eclipse in 100 years!

You may want to get an extra pick me up to enjoy this beauty. Nov 18-19 is a lunar eclipse, watch the stunning full frost moon turn red. This full moon has other names as well, one being Beaver Full moon and another Dark Full moon. All were terms used by Native American tribes, it was to help mark the seasons. This Frost moon is the last full moon this autumn.

This full moon is in Taurus and the spiritual meaning refers to the use of sincerity, faith, a strong sense of purpose to evolve and elevate your soul. Jupiter in a square with the full moon does add a risk of greed, immorality, irresponsibility and exaggeration in the destructive and brutal nature of Algol (Demon Star). Algol comes to cause a little destruction, usually needed to create change. Don’t let this scare you, usually these are big universal energies that affect the collective as a whole, it won’t feel like it is personally coming after you.

Let’s get a little selfish and bring the Full Moon in Taurus message back to self. This energy tends to give us a strong desire to go after what we truly want. Grab some full bay leaves and a ball point sharpie. Get ready to cast out those demons (or ex’s). Look at what is really holding you back – now is the time to let it go. Be honest with yourself and the universe will answer with its help.

Take time to reflect on the things your letting go of and why. Mean what you say or in this case, mean what you write. Commit to letting go and moving forward.

If you have a burning bowl you can use that to burn your leaves, watch it catch fire and the crackling sound it makes truly soothes the soul. Take each leaf one at a time, read it aloud to yourself then set it aflame. Consider it an oath you take for yourself. Let that shit go and move on!

Repeating Numbers: What the Fuck Does it Mean?

The universe is one great big beautiful dance.

Numbers are a gentle way of dipping your toes into building trust with your own spiritual connection. It’s a very basic sign that you are in alignment with the universe and its melody. Everything in life is synchronicity. It is all one great big beautiful dance. Most people don’t notice messages. The flying hawk, the murder of crows, feathers or coins you find on your routine path just to name a few. Being in alignment means you are in the right place at the right time, keep trusting your gut.

Numbers are not bad or good. To quote my favorite witchy film The Craft “True magic is neither black, nor white – it’s both because nature is both. Loving and cruel, all at the same time.” Consider seeing repeating numbers a nudge from your HGA (Holy Guardian Angel), Deity, Ancestors or my personal favorite… Watcher.

Each number is connected to a vibrational energy or frequency, so they have different messages to give you. I hope my interpretations can help you unravel the messages from your guides.

My favorite number! Hail Satan! Sorry, just had to get that out of my system. This is an extremely misunderstood number and I’d like to clarify some things.  Seeing this sequence is an extremely good omen, honestly the best! On the tree of life, we have 10 sephoroths, the 6th sits perfectly between all three pillars and is connected to the Sun.

Think of the sun in the tarot… it’s the happiest fuckin card in the deck! The sun is all about happiness, clarity, successful beginnings in all aspects of life. It’s about harmony coming in, peaceful relationships and balance calming the mind.

When Crowley was asked to explain why he is called The Great Beast… he had the best response. “I’m just a ray of sunshine”. To me that’s sums up who he was and explains this misrepresentation the best. Six in a sequence is not what it seems at all, if anything it’s what we should all want.

Picking a deck is like picking a Vibe.

How to Choose a Tarot Deck that Speaks to You

This is usually a question I hear at least once a week. “How do I know if a deck is right for me?” I also hear people who follow the superstition that you can’t buy your own, you have to wait to be gifted a deck. That's like waiting for someone else to go out and find a dream job that is meant for you. Only you can use your five senses, picking a deck is like picking a vibe.

The first thing we need to understand is that every deck has its own personality. Some decks can be blunt AF, others are playful. Some decks like to focus on major endings in life and others love to be hopeless romantics. What is a natural energy that you are in tune with? Do you vibe well with brutal honesty? Do you prefer to be held by the hand while you face life's challenges? Do you tend to focus on matters of the heart or are you more interested in career and finances? Of course you could be like me and just have too many options for all different types of situations, collecting decks as if they are rare gems.  You have to be honest with yourself, when you see yourself going to pull cards, what reasons do you pull for?

We have three different systems of tarot to choose from. The Rider Waite Smith system is perfect for beginners. The images make it super easy for you to interpret the cards while learning. Most tarot decks are clones of this system, and most commonly found tarot books will accommodate this deck perfectly. The Marseille system is for the intermediate practitioner. You have made a connection with each of the cards and understand your personal interpretations at this point. Studies will have to continue with Marseille, it has traditions and customs that follow this unique system derived from Italy.  The Thoth system is advanced. It incorporates many aspects from astrology, Thelema, Kabbalah, The Golden Dawn and alchemy just to name a few. Thoth adds many layers to your readings. Pick what you feel comfortable with. Remember tarot is a lifelong love affair, not a race.

Does the artwork catch your eye? Do you feel you want to continue to see what else the deck has hidden, try to find all the little easter eggs and create your own connections to it. Usually the right tarot deck aligns with our daily spiritual practice. Are you into Druidry? The Druidcraft tarot might be perfect for you. There is a deck for every pantheon you can imagine. Angel decks, fairy decks to Demon decks using the 72 demons from the Goetia. One of my personal favorites of course. The egyption decks are stunning. Are you into kitchen witchery? There is even a deck based on medicinal plants and herbs.  I can go on and on, if you feel a deity has been calling you already, I urge you to research that deity and see what decks already exist pertaining to it. I guarantee there is a deck for just about anything these days, especially if we are talking Rider Waite clones. 

Personally what keeps a deck in my hands is not only the system but the feel. I'm big on shuffling. If the card stock is slippery, kind of like a playing card deck, then I consider that a big win. Riffle shuffling and overhand shuffling feels therapeutic. Find what card stock and size works best for your hands. I know I have an unpopular opinion when it comes to card stock. Most tarot readers will recommend high quality card stock decks. However I have noticed that means the cards feel super thick and hard to shuffle. I make it work when I need to but I have noticed I don’t reach for those decks. 

What we need to consider is that not all tarot decks come with in depth books. I highly recommend one reference book that you use for any Rider Waite smith clone that you use. The little white book that most decks come with don't give much information. If you are starting out, it may leave you with more questions than answers. I personally recommend picking up The Complete Guide to the Tarot by Edan Grey. It's a small, soft cover book that can fit in your bag and you can use to reference any deck very easily.

An energy vampire can never “steal” energy from us unless we consciously or unconsciously permit them to.

In our everyday world we have vampires that walk the streets in daylight. Sucking the fun, energy and excitement out of any situation. Do you notice when you spend some time with a certain type of person you are left feeling tired, drained or even at times depressed from having to listen to or be around them?  Yet after your interaction they seem to be revitalized or unphased from the conversation. You may have a psychic vampire that has sunk his or her teeth into you. An energy vampire is a term used to describe a living person who has allowed their vibration to become so low that they need to “feed-off” the energies and “drain” them emotionally- in order to function and feel satisfied.  Here are our top five that you may have to deal with in your life. 

1. The Narcissist

2. The Victim 

3. The Controller

4. The Constant Talker

5. The Exaggerator  

1. The Narcissist is a person who has an excessive interest or admiration of themselves. They tend to lack empathy and become withholding if you don't do things their way. They have little capacity for anything approaching unconditional love. They usually have big egos, they often like to argue and pick fights. A major key to protecting yourself from this type of energy vampire is self confidence. Being self assured within your own self.

2. The Victim is pretty obvious. Its people who tend to play the poor me card throughout their whole life. They drain energy with their constant whining and complaining yet refuse to act on any advice you offer. This type of energy vampire also has a constant need for reassurance and acceptance. Protecting yourself from this type of vampire may require some savvy conversation skills. When the individual continues with their constant whining, listen for a few minutes then gently turn the conversation in another direction. If that doesn't work let that person know that you would like to help them but their constant complaining won't result in any resolution . If the person's actions persist it may be time to find another friend. 

3. The Controller, think of a dominating boss or spouse. They often use threat or manipulation to get what they want. They need to have the reins at all times. They will do whatever is necessary to get their way. In some cases they may even resort to becoming aggressive or use emotional blackmail and guilt tripping their prey. This vampire often invalidates your emotions in order to dominate you or put you down. The best defense is to draw a line in which an unmistakable boundary is set. If they realize you have limits, they will back off of you and search for other victims. This vampire is one that leaves long term effects on its victims. It may take years to even realize you have been prey to the Controller. 

4. The Constant Talker takes over conversation by un-endingly sharing their own thoughts, feelings and anecdotes without giving pause to allow you to put in your two cents. They may also invade your personal physical space as they ramble on endlessly. The classic close talker or bubble breecher. Completely oblivious to your obvious discomfort. If it is not physically near you, sometimes they insert themselves into your personal life more than you allow them to. The easiest way to deal with this blood-sucking migraine is to simply not engage in conversation at all. There is no escaping them or success in trying to keep the topic light and enjoyable. Their endless drone is very difficult to at least make tolerable. We all know that one person that you don't want to dive deep with, there is no winning. They never know when to let the conversation end. They enjoy hearing themselves talk more than anything.

5. The Exaggerator or the drama queen. Luckily this is the easiest to deal with for the most part. They drain energy by exaggerating small instances, being late for a meeting is the end of the world. A minor illness is the worst cold ever. They also over- inflate their importance in small situations. The best way to deal with this one  is honestly to ignore them. They will lose interest in telling you all the little problems once you are not easily accessible. 

The truth is in any relationship, there will always be an exchange of energy. You get out of life what you tolerate and the same rules need to apply to everybody, regardless of family status. When it comes to violating your non-negotiables in life, family needs to be dealt with the same rules as anyone else for inner peace to be achieved. People either uplift us or they don't. Here are some things to think about when considering if someone is worth keeping in your life:

1. If your relationship with a person has changed, has it gotten better?

2. Can you wholeheartedly trust that person with your dreams, fears, secrets, or your heart?

3. Do you feel valued, loved, balanced, and supported? 

4. How would you describe the quality of energy exchange? Is it an equal exchange or one-sided?

5. Can you truly be yourself without fear of being judged, mocked, or ridiculed?

6.  If someone drains you, explore the root cause of your attachment and ask: Can the relationship dynamic shift?

Dia De Los Muertos

To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.

Cempasúchil is known as flor de muerto or flower of the dead. The lively yellow and orange marigolds date back to the time of the Aztecs. The color and scent of the flowers are believed to lure and awaken the resting spirits back to visit their families.

Dia De Los Muertos was originally celebrated in the summer months. During the 16th century once the Spanish colonized, their own catholic views on the dead influenced customs and traditions. It was changed to align with All Saints Day & All Souls Day. November 1st was to honor and celebrate children who have passed and November 2nd is for the adults.

Ofrenda is an altar with many offerings for their loved ones. Usually it is decorated with plenty of candles, food, drinks and photographs to help the short visit from beyond the grave be as homey and cozy as can be. The more personal you make it the more the night comes alive. Adding cigars, music, clothes that they used to wear and even their favorite candy brings it all so much closer to home.

La Catrina is an iconic figure in Mexican culture representing death. She is seen as someone in high society who honors and protects those who have passed. It is believed that the Aztecs worshipped the Goddess of Death and they believed she walked our loved ones by hand through the stages in death. The original image of La Catrina that we know and love was created by Jose Guadalupe Posada in the early 1900’s. He was a controversial and political cartoonist. He drew her with a fancy hat and feather because he felt his community was aspiring too much to be or look wealthy. This was his way of reminding his community that they all will end up dead in the end.

The Sugar Skull represents a departed soul. Usually the name of the departed is written on the forehead and placed on the gravestone or Ofrenda to honor the return of a particular spirit. It is labor intensive to make and usually made with sugar cane and a mold. Sugar skulls are decorated with beads, feathers, colored foil and icing. They can range in many different sizes. Usually they can be edible however they are not intended to be eaten. Just like our visitors from beyond the grave, it is a temporary beauty to behold.

It's time to bake some Pan De Muerto, heat up some Atole (Hot Chocolate) and celebrate the beautiful and colorful lives our loved ones enjoyed. One of my personal favorite things to do is visit with my closest loved ones and reminisce about all the goofy memories that make us laugh. Usually accompanied by some tequila while we play our family members favorite songs. Just like most Mexican families, extreme sadness is accompanied with extreme joy at the same time. If Vicente Fernandez happens to sneak in that playlist, let's make sure the tissues won't be too far from the tequila bottle.
